PLAY BALL!

Dedication; Hard Work; Perseverance; These are the life skills that I hope my kids will also learn as they grow and I believe athletics provides a great opportunity to learn.

When my boys started little league I noticed at practice how they weren’t concerned about the mechanics of their swing or their throwing. We as parents need to realize that our expectations are not the same as our kids. Motivation has to come from with in, you can’t force kids to be dedicated they must learn it. And they will.

The key word is 'will'.Sometimes we as parents get so involved in trying to help them be successful; we forget the age that their at. Try to remember how you were back then, I know hard work wasn't in my vocabulary. I grew up in Chicago, and our field was a parking lot. The nuns said we could use it any time after 6pm. No coaches, no trainer but we usually had an official (Sister Edna). We played a lot, which help me get better and better having a good time learning from each other.

I remember at one game how bad I felt about my son getting hit by a pitch. Then his team couldn’t get the 3rd out without the other team scoring 1or2 runs first. And of course the Blue calls are usually wrong. Final score 2(us) to 11. I felt so upset, frustrated, the sense of having no control while watching my son’s game was pretty hard to handle. So, preparing myself, thinking about how discouraged he must be I see this big smile on his face as I approach “Mom did you see me steal 2nd!” “Yes” I said, “And then when David smacked that ball down 1st I knew I would make it to home plate to score” “What a game!” “Huh Mom”.
It’s funny how the saying “Out of the mouth of babes” can be so true.

Sports provide opportunities to learn many lessons

Positive thinking
Respect for coaches, umpires, and the rules
Dealing with winning and losing
Working as a team
By the way this part is for us. You can’t expect kids to show sportsmanship if we as parents get all wound-up! Remember we are out there to have a good time, sure we want to win. What kid doesn’t want to show that he/she has game. I always tell my boys that they did good and as long as they played hard and
With heart what more is there.

Catching tips for 5yrs+

A baseball tip for the little ones that you could do inside/outside. We all have extra sox and I don’t know why but I always use to save them. And I’m glad I did! They are so great to teach kids how to catch. I would tell my lefty that he could only catch with his right hand and when he did he had to squeeze the sox.
If he wanted a mitt he had to first learn how to catch it this way so that he gets use to closing his hand and not depend on the mitt to trap the ball(sox). He worked hard because he already had a mitt picked out. We had lots of fun as he got better I would throw harder & higher then I would make sure he took a step as he threw it back. We would watch Baseball on TV and then copy what had happen, I’ll yell the runners going as I throw the sox at him. I’m sure glad it was just a sox after awhile I missed more than I caught.
Once he earned his mitt we used bean bags, tennis balls, and finally t-ball. I think it was more for my safety
Then his. He’s almost 14 and we still play catch 3 times a week in the backyard. My 11year old is ok with
2 nights a week.

The next drill is one RJ teammates thought I should mention………..
Here’s a drill for older players especially if the play during the summer

Tennis balls for playing catch
Setup:
Pair players up and have them stand about 15 – 20 yards apart. Position the players so the sun is directly behind one player.
Execution:
The player with the sun on his back will throw the ball to the other player as a fly ball, trying to arch it so it will be in the sun for the other player.
The player fielding the ball will use his glove to protect his eyes and catch the fly ball. Remind players to look below their glove for the ball as it gets in the sun. Have each player throw a few fly balls and then switch.

Hey there,
My boys want me to talk about hitting, and one thing you need to do is buy plastic baseball. Mostly because they hurt less. I don't know about you but my reflex kind of went huh? Oh, ya MOVE! When my boys were younger it was great most of the time they would miss the ball.
I've always enjoyed this one on one time with them. Believe me they grow up fast. Here's one of my favorite drills to get them concentrating on the pitch, as soon as possible. Its not enough to tell them to "watch the ball" odds are that they won't connect what you are trying to say.

First get some baseballs 6-10 and, using a marker (colored sharpies work great for this), draw coin-sized colored dots on the surface of the ball. Repeat the process using a different color, making sure that it is clearly distinguishable (red, green and blue work well for this). You could also use plastic baseballs.

To begin with, pitch to your batter from regulation distance, instruct them not to swing the bat. Instead, have them call out the color of the dot on the baseball as soon as they can identify it.

As the hitter's recognition improves, call out a certain color and only allow them to swing at that color ball. In all cases, make sure to mix up the colors used (this is why three colors are better than two), and hide the ball in your glove until you actually begin to make the pitch.

What have you accomplished? Your players are truly watching the ball from the very instant it leaves the pitcher's hand, giving younger players more time to nail down their timing, and older players more time to recognize the movement of the pitch. It goes without saying that players of all ages can benefit from this drill.

Have fun with this one and don't forget to look at what color you are throwing so you can tell them if its the right one they see. And with school coming to a close if you can go and see a live MLB game. If its been awhile you need to check out
family day for your home team.

Team Mom= Does anybody know what I'm doing?

MLB Baseball Tickets!

Hi
I know I'm not alone out there when I say "sure son I'll be the batter". (I'll be the one doing the belly dance darting your inside and behind my backside pitches)
You know they're always trying new ways of throwing Spit balls, fast balls, knucklesandwhich balls, OK that last one doesn't count.

What I have learned is you don't have to get all bruised up because you might feel guilty for not having more time with them.
First if you have garage or a backyard with a clothe line, go out and buy a tarp and some string or tie wraps and paint (like the kind Michael's or hobby section at any store)
Then:

A. Tie the upper part of the tarp to the garage or clothes line--either the long or short way--depending on how big a space you want to use.

B. Make an outline of a batter, you could have him/her or one of their teammates stand next to the tarp and trace their outline.

C. If you could put hooks on the tarp so you paint a left hand batter on one side and a right hand batter on the other side. This way you just unhook the tarp to use
either the right or left handed batter.

My son thought it was a crazy idea. But I would play the umpire and call strikes or
balls. Once I felt he had better control I would stand in front of the tarp and take a few swings.

P.S. At the bottom of the tarp don't make it tight. Let it have enough slack so that the ball stays by the tarp. You could use brick or something else to hold the bottom part in place. The problem with the tarp being to tight is that the ball being pitched might go through the tarp after a few throws. The worst that has happen to me was not ducking fast enough as the ball ricochet off the tarp. Another kodak moment missed..........

By the way when was the last time you had some Peanuts and Cracker Jacks.
Two great teams are going to play each other in July. So why not make it a mom and future MLB player day by getting a few pointers from watching the pros live and up front.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Tickets at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Fri, July 18, 2008 7:05PM

I have two boys, one is a New York Yankee fan, and the other loves the Boston Red Sox. Me I like the Angles. So in July the Angels play the Red Sox and in August my Angles play the Yankee's. So I'll be getting a few extra "I love you mom" and
"need any help". Sports sometimes you can make them work in your favor...lol..

I'll be back later with some more idea's and survival tips. And I whole heartily believe the more they practice (especially at home)the better and more confident they become.
So keep your eye on the ball and your head down.
AND SEIZE THE MOMENT!!!
